To what extent microbiota composition is a heritable trait has received considerable attention in recent years, but has yielded conflicting results particularly in human. We provide evidence from a large Chinese mosaic pig population of an effect of the genotype of the host on the abundance of some taxa and in particular of an effect of ABO genotype on members of the p.75.a5 genus. We show that this effect is mediated by intestinal GalNAc concentrations on bacteria with non-inducible GalNAc operon. We will present evidence that the trans-species ABO balanced polymorphism in suidae maintains a polymorphism of the GalNAc operon in intestinal bacteria.
Michel Georges has devoted his career to the development and use of genomic tools for the forward genetic dissection of complex traits of medical and agronomic importance in humans and domestic animals. Amongst others, his laboratory has identified several mutations affecting muscularity in domestic animals including the double-muscling gene. Michel Georges obtained the Wolf Prize in agriculture in 2007, the Belgian Francqui prize in 2008, and an ERC advanced grant in 2013. He is a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine (1997), the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (2013), and the French National Academy of Agriculture (2016).
