At the University of Greifswald’s Institute ofGeography and Geology, Chair of Applied Geology in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, there is a job vacancy starting 1 February 2025, subject to budgetary regulations, for a full-time
(Postdoctoral) Research Fellow.
The position is to be filled for a limited period of 3 years. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV‑L Wissenschaft. The position is suitable for part-time employment.
Job Description:
- Independent conception, acquisition and implementation of research projects in the field of hydrogeochemistry of trace elements, in particular using the new LA-ICP-MS instrumental setup to be procured for the characterisation of microscale trace element distribution in solids and their quantification in liquids.
- Support in the preparation, establishment and operation of the new LA-ICP-MS laboratory of the Chair of Applied Geology and, if necessary, further laboratory infrastructure.
- Publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journal articles, at national and international conferences etc.
- Support of teaching and student supervision, and instruction of students and staff, in particular in connection with LA-ICP-MS and other laboratory infrastructure; support of administrative tasks in the field of Applied Geology.
Job Requirements:
- Successfully completed postgraduate university degree (master’s) in geosciences and specialisation in the field of hydrogeochemistry
- Successfully completed doctoral degree with a minimum grade of “very good” in the field of hydrogeochemistry, with a focus on water-rock interaction processes regarding the cycles of inorganic trace elements
- Experience in submitting proposals and conducting research projects in the field of hydrogeochemistry, in particular on the hydrogeochemistry of toxicologically relevant trace elements
- Relevant experience in hydrochemical, geochemical and mineralogical laboratory analysis, in particular LA-ICP-MS, ideally in various laboratories
- Experience in experimental water-solid interaction (e.g. column experiments, batch experiments, sequential extraction methods, etc.)
- Proof of own thematically relevant scientific publications in high-ranking international peer-reviewed journals appropriate to career stage, as well as own presentations at relevant international conferences
- Experience in the supervision and laboratory instruction of students and staff, experience in the preparation and implementation of courses in the field of applied geology
- Excellent English language skills
Other knowledge and skills that are taken into account in the selection procedure:
- Professional experience at scientific institutions abroad
- Experience in the acquisition of third-party research grants and scholarships
- Suitability and alignability of previous and planned future research work with the research priorities of the chair (in particular hydrogeochemistry of trace elements and nutrients) and the priorities of the Geo2 Institute and the University (in particular climate change, water supply, human-environment interaction)
- Experience in interdisciplinary cooperation and other relevant laboratory methods (e.g. microscopy/petrology, isotope analysis, electron beam microprobe)
- Experience with relevant computer programmes (e.g. MS Office, hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical modelling and evaluation software, GIS, statistical and visualisation software, Python)
