The University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is seeking candidates for the position of

Junior Professor (W1) of Regional Development

(without tenure track)

for appointment by 1 October 2025. We are looking for an academic from the field of economic geography or a related economic or social science discipline with a proven track record in knowledge-based and sustainable regional development as demonstrated by a dissertation and other publications. A profile that is compatible with the existing focal points of work in this area at the Institute of Geography and Geology is desirable. Specific skills in the application and further development of quantitative empirical methods in research and teaching are an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to cooperate with colleagues at the university and at other institutions, play an active role in the acquisition of third-party funding, supervise doctoral candidates and participate in teaching, especially in the Master's degree course in Regional Development and Tourism, as well as in the Bachelor's and teacher-training degree courses in Geography. Applicants must be willing to take on tasks in academic self-administration. Experience abroad is desirable. The future holder of the position must be able and willing to teach in English. The University of Greifswald encourages and demands managerial staff run their organisational units in a family-friendly manner.

We offer a cooperative and inspiring working environment and will support you in the development of your own independent research profile. At the Institute of Geography and Geology, we conduct interdisciplinary research into the interactions between changes to society and geosystems under the motto ‘GEO² - Human-Environmental Systems in Space and Time: Understanding the Earth - Shaping our Future’. The Institute contributes extensively to the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO).

The necessary qualifications are defined in § 62(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and special expertise in academic work which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree.  If you have worked as a teaching and/or research assistant or as a graduate assistant prior to or after obtaining your doctorate, the times in which you completed your doctorate and in which you were employed may not exceed a total of nine years. In accordance with § 62(2) LHG M-V, junior professors are appointed for a period of three years as a temporary civil servant. In case of a positive evaluation after the third year, the contract is extended for a further three years.

This advertisement is directed at all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Thus, applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for this position. Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will also be given preference.

Unfortunately, application costs (e.g. travel expenses for interviews) will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
