University Senate Adopts Compromise in University Name Dispute

Pursuant to the decision made on the 17th January 2018, the University’s Basic Regulations will be changed to read as follows:

“The University in Greifswald carries the name Universität Greifswald; this can be preceded by the supplementary name Ernst Moritz Arndt subject to the provisions made in an ordinance that must be passed by the Reduced Senate after hearing the Extended Senate. At the same time, the University’s uniform appearance in legal matters must be ensured.”

The change to the Basic Regulations will not be effective until it has been agreed to by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

In January 2017 the Senate voted to stop the use of namesake Ernst Moritz Arndt in the official German name of the University (Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald). This decision was later declared void by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Ministry of Education, Science and Culture on formal grounds.
