The Rector of the University of Greifswald, Prof. Dr. Johanna Eleonore Weber, emphasizes the great importance of this honour: “The University of Greifswald finds itself part of a worldwide competition for the brightest minds in research. Offering young scholars and established researchers the best possible employment and development opportunities is of utmost importance for the competitiveness of our University. Having now been rewarded by the European Commission for our strategy, the University gains essential national and international visibility as an attractive employer and excellent research institution.”

To gain the seal, the University underwent an intensive internal analysis. All of the relevant groups - from junior researchers, to administrative staff and up to the University governance - were included in an open process. On the one hand, existing strengths of the University were highlighted, such as the Graduate Academy, the Mentoring Programme for young female scholars, research and transfer support, Family Service and measures to establish gender equality and to optimise working conditions in research. On the other hand, aspects were named which need further attention in order to attain the goal of best possible working conditions in every respect.
