The cross-border Temicare project that provides the best possible care for children with cancer has been awarded the Sparkasse Vorpommern prize for German-Polish cooperation. The name of the EU-funded project stands for “Telemedicine-Integrated German-Polish Paediatric Cancer Centre in the Euroregion Pomerania”. The prize was awarded on 16 November 2023 during the kick-off event for the Polish cultural festival polenmARkT in Greifswald’s Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg. It is awarded in cooperation with the University of Greifswald and polenmARkT e.V.
University Medicine Greifswald’s paediatric clinic has joined forces with the hospitals in Szczecin and Kraków to form Temicare that ensures the best possible care to children with cancer on both sides of the border. Experts from the participating medical centres regularly discuss the best possible treatment of the individual children. The parents of the respective child often also take part in these telemedicine consultations. This approach makes it possible for the young patients to profit from the expertise of the specialists at three specialist clinics.
Temicare has also established a joint series of seminars. Specialists from the three hospitals provide further training to students and doctors every week and teaching rotates. Several cross-border online training offers for the nursing staff at the three locations have already been completed successfully. Since the start of the project, four years ago, doctors and nursing staff as well as administrative project staff have been able to take part in numerous mutual work-shadowing programmes in Greifswald, Szczecin, and Kraków. Three conferences have also been held within the framework of the project. The establishment of Temicare was financed by the EU Regional Development Fund.
The Sparkasse Vorpommern honoured this successful collaboration with this year’s award for German-Polish cooperation. The prize was accepted on the German side by the Director of the Clinic and Outpatient Clinic for Paediatrics Prof. Dr. Holger Lode, as well as by the Polish Temicare project managers, Prof. Dr. Tomasz Urasiński from Szczecin and PD Dr. Aleksandra Wieczorek from Kraków.
