To what extent are tourism and town planning sustainable? How resource and environmentally friendly can mobility and the production of energy be? And how can artificial intelligence help to make our life, actions and economic activities more sustainable? These and further pressing issues will be subject of the summer school SustainMV.
As part of this special project, students from all over the world approach the topic of sustainability from various perspectives and discuss these with experts from the state’s universities. For example, the summer school provides talks on recycling economy and waste management, the use of renewable energies and sustainable tourism, as well as the degradation of plastic using enzymes – topics that all provide inspiration for shaping a sustainable future.
A new feature of this year’s event is the public lecture to mark the start of the on-site events, which will be held by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans Joosten from the University of Greifswald on the topic of: “The Great Rewetting: How to solve the World’s peatland problems comprehensively and in time”. This will take place on Monday, 22 August, at 6.00 p.m. in Greifswald’s Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg.
The international interest in the summer school is immense. Approximately 150 students from more than 25 countries registered for the digital introductory week, which is being held on an event platform that combines communication tools with smart interaction functionality. More than 130 students from the partner universities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s higher education institutions applied to take part in the events being held on site, 35 of which were selected for active participation. These are studying degree courses in the environmental and engineering sciences, physics, chemistry and biology, economics and financial sciences, tourism and town/landscape planning, as well as early-years and teacher education.
The SustainMV summer school sets new standards in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s international education marketing, which are to be expanded upon further in the future. The label ‘SustainMV’ unites the Universities of Greifswald and Rostock, the Universities of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg, Stralsund and Wismar, and the Rostock University of Music and Drama in their quest to promote Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a location for education and research to an international audience.
The summer school SustainMV is funded by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs, as well as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
