The Plant³ Alliance is developing solutions for a more sustainable economy, as required by the climate crisis, scarcity of raw materials and changing consumer demands: Fossil raw materials are replaced by renewable raw materials; by-products and residual products must be used in a value-added manner. In cooperation projects between scientific and entrepreneurial partners, new products, processing methods and services are researched and developed on the basis of local raw materials from land, moor and sea. The participants each bring their own specific expertise to the table. The aim is to increase value creation in Vorpommern and to positively promote regional structural change. Following the successful interim evaluation, Plant³ will now receive a further seven million euros for new research and development projects. The next call for project proposals is expected to take place in June 2022.

Plant³ has been funded by the BMBF since 2019. Among other things, the project partners are developing building materials such as insulating materials or injection moulded parts from moor materials to substitute plastic. They calculate ecosystem performances that result from the grazing of rewetted moorland by buffalo. Analyses are being carried out on germ-inhibiting active substances from the moorland plant sundew. Other topics include the extraction of sugar compounds from macroalgae in the Baltic Sea and the production of high-quality feed additives from residues from regional agriculture or paludiculture using the bacterial symbiont of the naval shipworm isolated from the Baltic Sea. The Plant³ alliance is oriented towards market needs in the focus areas of building materials, food, food supplements & feed, bioplastics & packaging, fine chemicals & phytopharmaceuticals.

In order to inform entrepreneurs about current bioeconomic developments, Plant³ offers an online seminar series together with the Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Schwerin, Rostock and Neubrandenburg. The next event will take place on 26 April 2022.
