The prizes from the Greifswald University Club (GUC) will be awarded on the 12th May 2017 at 4.00 p.m. in the University of Greifswald’s Aula. The speech in the honour of the senior award winner will be held by Ralf Sutter, Director of Development Dentsply Sirona Instruments. This will be followed by the ceremonial address from Prof. Dr. Heyo K. Kroemer, Dean of University Medicine Göttingen, on the ‘Digitisation of Our Life. The End of Elucidation’.
The Senior Award is awarded to established researchers for exceptional research in cooperation with the industry. This year’s awardee is Prof. Dr. Thomas Kocher from the Centre for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (ZZMK), Periodontology Department at University Medicine Greifswald. In particular, Professor Kocher has advanced the development of instruments for the areas concerning tooth decay and tartar removal. This has been reflected in several joint developments with the companies KaVo, Hawe Neos and Sirona. The latter and Kocher are now working specifically on the use of physical plasmas in dentistry (‘Plasma Medicine’).
‘As a proven, internationally recognised researcher with a strong practice-orientation and solid experience in cooperation with companies, Prof. Dr. Thomas Kocher stands as an example for the GUC’s acknowledgement of exceptional practice-oriented research and industry/science cooperation,’ says the President of the GUC, Dr. Friedrich-Wilhelm Hagemeyer.
Prof. Dr. Mihaela Delcea from the University of Greifswald’s Institute of Biochemistry will receive the Junior Award, worth 3,000 euros, for her practice-oriented research on the elucidation of molecular and biophysical causes of autoimmune diseases. Mihaela Delcea received one of the world’s most significant person-based grants from the European Research Council ERC. In the past years she has played an important role in the elucidation of autoimmune diseases of the cardiovascular system, when the body’s own immune system attacks own proteins, which then leads to life-threatening complications for the patient. Cardiovascular disease is the most frequent cause of death in Germany.
The start-up team from SoTaMed, Dr. Jenny Schulz and Balazs Baranyai, are to receive the Business Award for the development of a procedure for cultivating sundew on rewetted raised bogs and the commercialisation of the gained resource. The Award is linked with prizemoney of 1,500 euros. Sundew is used as a medicinal plant for treating respiratory diseases. In the long term, the supply to the pharmaceutical industry from the wild is endangered.
The Greifswald Business Award will be awarded by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister of Economics, Employment and Health, Harry Glawe. The prize has been awarded annually by the Greifswald University Club (GUC) since 2013. The prize aims to honour special achievements in the practice-oriented research of experienced researchers and companies interested in research, as well as junior researchers. In addition, the exploitation of innovative research results by the founding of companies has been specifically supported by the Greifswald Business Award since 2014.
