Only approximately 23 % of all new enrolments come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. About 42 % of the new students come from former West Germany and roughly 8 % from Berlin. 156 new foreign students (total of approximately 720) have found their way to Greifswald. In total there are currently 10,460 students at the University. It can be expected that more students will enrol in the coming days.

Apart from Medicine and Dentistry, Psychology with 39 applicants per study place and Human Biology with 24 applicants per study place were particularly popular among the courses with admission restrictions. For degree courses with no admission restrictions, Jurisprudence, the new bachelor’s degree course, Management and Law, and the bachelor’s degree course in Environmental Science were in high demand.

‘We are happy that the number of new enrolments has slightly increased since last year. Due to the demographic change in Germany, we cannot take for granted that we will be able to maintain our number of students.  With our broad range of study possibilities and good study conditions we have been able to attract young people from all over Germany to do their degrees in Greifswald. Thanks to intensive marketing measures we have also managed to introduce two new degree courses in a short period of time that have proven to be very popular,’ says the Rector, Prof. Dr. Johanna Weber.

The prizes for excellent teaching are traditionally awarded as part of the opening ceremony. The jury chose three prizewinners from the numerous suggestions that had been submitted by the students. Prof. Dr. Michael Herbst, Director of the Research Institute for Evangelism and Church Development, received the prize in the category ‘Integrative Teaching’.  Prof. Dr. Dr. Martin Gorke, professor of Environmental Ethics won the award in the category ‘Innovative Interdisciplinary Teaching’. Dorthe G.A. Hartmann was honoured with the prize for excellent teaching in English.
