Simon Schäfer-Stradowsky, Managing Director of IKEM, congratulates Prof. Dr. Rodi on this honour: ‘Michael Rodi was a pioneer in linking his key field of research - tax law - to the topics sustainability and climate policy at an early stage of his career. This interdisciplinary approach not only led to a strong influence on the development of climate law from the very beginning, but by founding IKEM, he also created permanent structures to ensure its further development. The ties between his original expertise in the financial system and his passion for climate policy are more relevant than ever before. Congratulations on receiving the Greifswald Research Award.’

Dr. Friedrich-Wilhelm Hagemeyer, President of the Greifswald University Club highlights the success of IKEM, ‘which was the first research institute for climate law to investigate the significant link to energy and mobility issues. The GUC has hardly ever been able to honour a greater success story of a ‘start up’ in applied research than Prof. Rodi, founder of IKEM, which, under his directorship, has gained an outstanding national and international reputation.’

‘Michael Rodi is an excellent example of an academic who uses his expertise to successfully and suitably tackle challenges faced by society. He stands for practice-oriented teaching, research that is significant to society, the industry and politics, as well as successful transfer as shown by the founding of IKEM. Linking energy and mobility with the need to protect the climate is more relevant than ever before,’ underlines Prof. Katharina Riedel, Rector of the University of Greifswald.

In addition to Michael Rodi, Dr. Neetika Nath from University Medicine Greifswald’s Institute of Bioinformatics was awarded the Greifswald Research Award in the category ‘Junior’ for her excellent achievements in applied research in the field of AI-based biomarker identification and the association of genetic variants to specific diseases.

The award ceremony for the Greifswald Research Award took place on 21 October from 4.00 to 6.00 p.m. in a hybrid format. The celebratory speech was held by Christian Pegel, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister of Energy, Infrastructure and Digitisation, on the topic of ‘Virtual Space Going Rural: Energy, Mobility, Autarky after the Pandemic.’

Background Information
The Greifswald Research Award has been awarded annually by the GUC for cutting edge applied research since 2013. It is a central format for bringing together players and topics and making them visible to a broader public. The GUC is a charitable organisation that creates ties between applied research taking place in Greifswald and the industry. The prizewinners of the annual award can be honoured in the categories Junior, Senior, or Business Award. The Senior Award is bestowed upon both established academics and entrepreneurs.
