The patron country, Estonia, is presenting its 34-person Eesti Politsei- ja Piirivalveorkester together with the popular pop, jazz and musical singer, Liisi Koikson, as special guest. With the Swedish Tarabband and Frigg from Finland, two internationally celebrated bands of the folk and world music scene will be making their way to Greifswald: One of them plays electrifying oriental songs, the other energetic string folk. During the Joik Night, we will be enchanted by voices that seem to be from another world, when the Norwegian trios around Marja Mortensson and Torgeir Vassvik propel the singing of the indigenous Sámi into new dimensions.
The grande dame of the Finnish Romani music will also be giving a performance: The Hilja Grönfors Trio captivates audiences with its very melancholic and very merry songs. MiaMee and Oopus invite you to rock and rave at the Eesti Electro Club Night. The Swedish guests include the band Skenet, with powerful folk rock, the quintet of pianist Alice Hernqvist, with gentle Nordic jazz, and the improvisational duo Medi, with their fun programme for kids. A further jazz act, Q3 Collective, will perform their new composition of music for accompanying the famous Swedish silent film classic, “Terje Vigen”. The bands SnikSnak from Denmark and Timshel from Finland are known for their lively indie pop - the latter already landed a video hit on MTV Deutschland and Viva. The septet DoktorDoktor, from Copenhagen, grooves with its brass-backed hip hop soul. The young singer/songwriter and pianist, Inger Nordvik, from Norway, moves audiences with her sentimental songs. The baroque concert at Schloss Griebenow with Scania Consort from southern Sweden and the organ concert performed by the Estonian maestro, Andres Uibo, guarantee first-class classical music.
Norwegian king of thrillers, Torkil Damhaug, is sure to create an atmosphere of suspense during the reading of one of his thrillers. Goosebumps can also be expected during Zdeněk Lyčka’s presentation of his expedition that took him across Greenland on skis. Iceland is also being featured at the festival: Artist, Bjargey Ólafsdóttir, will present her new works at two exhibitions. She will also read together with the Finnish author, Briitta Hepo-oja, at the book presentation for “Neue Nordische Novellen” (“New Nordic Novels”) - a translation project produced by students from Greifswald. Current trends in literature and film will be investigated at an information forum being held under the title “Nordic Noir and Finnish Weird”. An international podium discussion will look at “Gender Equality in Northern Europe”. Further talks, readings, films, concerts and exhibitions round off the festival’s programme.
The diverse genres found in the festival’s programme do not only unite the music and culture of the northern European countries and Scandinavia, it also brings together artists and people who all share the same interest in northern European culture.
