The anniversary offered the occasion to exchange thoughts on current research collaboration and to develop ideas for new cooperation projects. The Universities of Greifswald, Tartu and the University of Latvia in Riga can look back at a long tradition of outstanding research and teaching. Today, they are all faced with similar challenges. One of these, for example, is demographic change, sinking numbers of prospective students with higher education entrance qualifications lead to a reduced number of students.

The scientific exchange between the Universities of Tartu and Greifswald with its history of several hundred years is currently being consolidated thanks to European cooperation. In addition to the good scientific collaborations with the Faculties of Arts and Humanities, Theology and Law and Economics, joint research projects could be established in the fields of Microbiology and Landscape Ecology.

“The University of Latvia’s prize-winning new science building is impressive. They have managed to bring together various natural science disciplines in a highly modern research and teaching building, for which I must congratulate Rector, Prof. Indriķis Muižnieks,” says Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel, Pro-Rector for Research and International Affairs at the University of Greifswald.

The exchange of experiences with representatives from two international degree courses in Riga has provided impulses for the development of similar degree courses at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities. During meetings with staff members of the Contact Office for the Universities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Baltic-German University Liaison Office in Riga, the delegation discussed new approaches for the provision of support.

In summary, all of the members of the delegation concluded that the trip had provided them with new ideas. Both partner universities are particularly worthwhile destinations for students from Greifswald studying who are studying various disciplines.
