Dorota Sarwinska established her first ties with the University of Greifswald in 2020, during a research stay funded by the Erasmus+ programme. Despite the hurdles resulting from the global pandemic, she managed to realise her master’s dissertation on the “Production and Characterisation of 3D-printed Mini Tablets for Paediatric Use” at the Center of Drug Absorption and Transport. During her work on the dissertation, Ms. Sarwinska became familiar with modern procedures such as melt extrusion and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), which are essential for pharmaceutical production. Her research results were published in the scientific journal Pharmaceuticals and received international recognition, including a first prize in a university competition in Gdańsk.
Dorota Sarwinska commenced her doctorate as part of the “European Training Network (ETN AGePOP” in July 2021. This EU-funded project, which involves several universities and international pharmaceutical companies, aims to develop tailored solutions for the pharmacological therapy of older people. In her thesis, Ms. Sarwinska is researching the conditions under which geriatric patients take their medication and their influence on the effect of the drugs. The surveys performed in collaboration with the hospital in Wolgast and Greifswald’s pharmacies have provided interesting insights for improving how older adults take their medication. After the results were published in 2024 in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and thanks to the prizewinner’s close ties to the Medical University of Gdańsk, the study has now extended to Poland.
“Ms. Dorota Sarwinska is a highly talented researcher, who publishes the results of her research in several languages, i.e. German, Polish, and English, and who, as a result of her commitment, promotes interdisciplinary and international collaboration. Her research efforts, in particular in the pharmacological therapy of geriatric patients, are highly relevant to society and demonstrate the productive cooperation between Greifswald and Gdańsk,” explained Prof. Dr. Werner Weitschies from the Department of Biopharmacy and Pharmaceutlical Technology at the University of Greifswald’s Institute of Pharmacy in his laudatory speech.
Prof. Dr. Andreas Ohme, Chairman of the polenmARkT e.V association, added: “As a result of her outstanding research in the field of pharmacy, Ms. Dorota Sarwinska has established an active connection between the Universities of Greifswald and Gdańsk. Her activities are an example of successful international exchange in the world of academia and bear witness to significant German-Polish collaboration.”
