Prof. Katharina Schaufler received the award for her work on elucidating the mechanisms and prevalence of antibiotic resistant germs, in particular the multidrug-resistant gram-negative and positive bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcaceae families. Her work provides a foundation for recognising particularly dangerous developments for the global healthcare system. It also opens up new kinds of therapy. In her research, Katharina Schaufler uses a broad spectrum of methods that implement new approaches to fight bacteria that can trigger diseases. These comprise traditional methods of micro and molecular biology, as well as bioinformatics and novel methods of pharmaceutical biology. The aim is to transfer the results of her fundamental research directly into application.
Katharina Schaufler completed her doctorate at the Freie Universität Berlin in 2016 and then worked at the Harvard Medical School until 2018. She has been a member of staff at the University of Greifswald’s Institute of Pharmacy since 2019. She has been group leader of the independent junior research group ‘Disarming Pathogens as a Different Strategy to Fight Antimicrobial-Resistant Gram Negatives’ (DISPATch MRGN) in Greifswald since 2020.
The Robert Koch Foundation, founded in 1907, is a non-profit foundation that promotes the advancement of medicine and has its headquarters in Berlin. It provides funding for scientific fundamental research in the field of infectious diseases, for example, projects that aim to solve medical and hygienic problems. Every year, the foundation awards several important scientific prizes, the Robert Koch Prize, the Robert Koch Gold Medal, three awards for early-career researchers, and, since 2013, the Prize for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention.
