North and Baltic Seas as defining link
The members of the Hanse University Alliance are not only geographically linked by their proximity to the Baltic Sea or the North Sea, they are also tied by joint research topics and study offers in fields such as the oceans, climate, sustainability, energy, and health. The notion of the Hanse (German for Hanseatic League) serves as the binding element – a symbol for cooperation, development and the exchange of knowledge.
In times of global challenges and multiple crises, and in light of competition in the academic realm, collaboration can help northern Germany gain recognition as a high-performing location for academia and innovation that provides important impulses and is perceived internationally.
Potential for the future of the North
In particular, this will enable stronger international ties, which are highly relevant for academia, but also the labour market, for innovations, and as a result of demographic changes. Together with the members of the Northern German Conference of Science Ministers (NWMK), the ten universities reviewed the past activities and developed perspectives for the future in order to exploit the potential in and for the North at their meeting on 9 December 2024.
Joint further development and presentation of new alliance
The Hanse University Alliance comprises ten member universities: University of Bremen, University of Greifswald, University of Hamburg, Hamburg University of Technology, Kiel University, Universität zu Lübeck, Leuphana University Lüneburg, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, University of Rostock and the University of Groningen. There are currently approximately 185,000 students, of which 28,000 are international students, and 2900 professors at the universities in the alliance. The universities have been pro-active in the development of quality in studies and teaching for the last three decades. Taking this experience as a foundation, the previous association is now evolving into the Hanse University Alliance in order to meet future challenges in the quality of the offers for students, to advance joint topics for the northern German region and make the significance of academia more visible in changes to society and the economy.
The Hanse University Alliance is committed to continuing the development of the northern German academic and innovation region in close collaboration with the northern German Science Ministers and Senators and to acting as a united facilitator for scientific and educational policy.
“With today’s event, we are sending out a signal of pulling together to tackle the future and recognise the strengths of academia in and for the North. Our collaboration shall help us to enhance these strengths in the future,” explains Sascha Spoun, Spokesperson of the Hanse University Alliance and President of Leuphana Lüneburg.
